Love this!

My friend lives in Saltaire and on her street of terraced houses I've noticed that by their front doors are little recesses, I've asked her what they're for and she didn't know.  Well today I called at her house fairly early and was very excited (I'm clearly easily pleased!) to see that her next door neighbour's little recess was full of milk and eggs.  Oh - brilliant - that's what they're for - love that!  So I googled, and yep rumour has it that when milk deliveries were established and as these houses step right onto the street, milk bottles were put in these little 'stores' so people didn't walk into them.  Another version however is that they housed a boot scraper. Well I was intrigued, and oh the memories of lying in bed listening to the milk man doing his round at 5.30, knowing you could go back to sleep for a couple of hours!
And, I have lived in many, many houses in my life, and a recurrent house number was number 22, which was where we lived when this was in the charts.  We laughed then and I laugh now! :)
I also have several Dairy Crest milk bottles which look lovely with a single flower in, love those bottles - and aint milk great! :)
