Taiga forest at the treeline

At about 400m the forest is pruned by the weather along an abrupt line. The winter snows smother, bend and break the trees above this point leaving curiously shaped mounds and pyramids that are often hollow, providing shelter for animals that venture up here.

The long evening light or 'blue light' in the winter at this time of year lasts  most of the afternoon.
