The saddest sign ever?
Took a walk along the Union Canal this morning. You can reach the Bridge Inn at Ratho via a No 20 bus, and that was where I started walking, heading in the direction of Edinburgh City Centre.
There's a bridge en route which has a sign about John Scott Russell discovering the solitary wave. I spent a good while imagining what that meant. Thought of him sadly, alone, waving. Not a bit of it! It was a discovery of momentous importance. The solitary wave became known as the soliton and was a key mathematical concept, applicable to all sorts of different areas like optics and even DNA. Read all about it. There's another interesting article here.
Also became an otter spotter. Delightful moments spent watching an otter swimming - unfortunately too fast for me to catch a decent pic.
Plenty to see on a canal walk, and even more to imagine.
