Pointless balcony

Now, who on earth would construct a balcony, complete with rococo ironwork, with a massive great hole in the middle? Seems a bit pointless to me.

Thank you for the nice words about dear Fledge, yesterday. I have nothing much to report as I was at work today. However, the father was still gathering worms when we arrived home tonight so I figure that's a good sign.
