The Orwell Bridge

This is the Orwell Bridge taken from an area known locally as The Strand, Wherstead, nr Ipswich.
The bridge spans the River Orwell and is part of the A14, the main route to Felixstowe Port from the Midlands.   If the bridge is closed by an accident, high winds or whatever reason the traffic is diverted through Ipswich town which as you can imagine is a logistical nightmare.   The bridge does remain open whilst routine maintenance takes place as there is an area under the main road network where engineers can check bearings etc and which is large enough to drive a double decker bus through apparently.
Peregrine Falcons have successfully reared young in  nests on top of the legs of the bridge so it is good for nature too.
