In perspective.....
It being Saturday, my "date" asked if I would like to go and see the prefabricated homes in Catford that he had visited some time ago on one of his walks with his walking group......
Wikipedia says
In the United Kingdom the word ‘prefab’ is often associated with a specific type of prefabricated house built in large numbers after the Second World War,[4] such as Airey houses, as a temporary replacement for housing that had been destroyed by bombs, particularly in London.
Despite the intention that these dwellings would be a strictly temporary measure, many remained inhabited for years and even decades after the end of the war. A small number are still in use in the 21st Century, but more and more are being demolished. In 2011 it was announced that Britain’s largest remaining prefab estate of 187 homes in Lewisham, South-East London, is to be redeveloped except for six homes.[5]
It was like entering a secret world held in a time warp. Some of the homes were well kept, others were quite sad to see, though still being lived in. All lining little alley ways and so quiet. We didn't see or hear anyone.
Time will be moving on even here eventually as each home will be demolished when the current tenants leave. 70 years of history will vanish....except for 6 homes it seems, which will remain as post war memorabilia. Fascinating.
I was then taken to a classic bike workshop to see what the newly acquired 1955, pre unit Triumph Tiger 110 motorbike will look like when it has been restored....
Brunch in a busy and lively Cote in Blackheath Village was nice after all that information....!
