Japan Day in Canterbury
My youngest son Jamie rang me this morning to see if I wanted to go with him to the Japan Day. By the time we got there it was hard to find a park and we missed the Omikoshi Parade.
There were so many people there it was hard to get any really good shots. Lots of food stalls were there but the queues were so long. In the end we found some sushi.
The Shot Top Right is of Rice Cake pounding.
At these rice cake pounding events, known as mochitsuki in Japanese, participants use large wooden mallets to pound rice that is placed in a wooden mortar. One person pounds the rice with a mallet while the other, usually kneeling, has to flip the rice cake over while carefully avoiding being hit with the mallet. The rice cakes are then decorated with condiments such as sweet bean paste.
It was a lovely days outing and we stopped off on the way home for a Bubble Tea. I had Honeydew and Jamie had Blueberry. A wonderful way to end the day.
