Cumuppence

The billboard says it all really.

The 77 year old found an intruder in his house and rather than risk a battering from him, the homeowner got in first.

He gave the intruder a whack then put him on a chair while the police arrived.

It seems the lad waited quietly on the chair.
Presumably he didn't fancy another whack if he moved.

The story set me thinking.
The 77 year old man is from an era when a bit of physical retribution was regularly issued.

Teachers would throw chalk or the board rubber.
Neighbours would give naughty kids a whack and the kids got another when they got home.
A "thick ear" from a police officer often did more good than going through the courts.

I'm not suggesting we go back to those days but the homeowner in this case is from the generation when those who stepped out of line got their cumuppence (the intruder is now in prison).
