Art Deco Doors.
These doors were once the entrance to Barnwell Festival Theatre, in Newmarket Road ,Cambridge. It is a Grade 2 listed building, now in use as the Buddhist Centre. It dates from 1814 and was one of only a handful of pre Victorian theatres outside London. Inside are two tiered galleries and it is in the process of being renovated. The theatre was given a new lease of life in 1926 but closed in 1939 when WW2 broke out. After various uses a few performances took place, the last being Chekhov's 'The Seagull' in Oct 1997. It was also used by the Arts theatre as a store for costumes and scenery. I remember in my schooldays noticing the pattern on these doors as my friend lived next door. Sometime I would like to look inside as apparently it has not been altered much.
