Reunion

A very pleasant afternoon was spent meeting up with 3 old/ex colleagues. The picture shows Derek. After lunch on the 4th. floor of the Merseyside Maritime Museum we went to an excellent exhibition which runs until October: "On Their Own. Britain's Child Migrants". It seems incredible to think that children were being sent to Australia as recently as the 1960's. Over the years the largest number, 100,000- average age 8- were sent to Canada, and about a half these spent some time in Liverpool before being put on a boat at the Liverpool Docks. The Sheltering Home for Destitute Children was purpose built in Liverpool and opened in 1889. It housed up to 120 children and prepared them for their journey. The cost of migration was £10, as opposed to a cost of about £12 for a year in a children's home, so no doubt the economics were a part of the attraction. This building is still standing in Myrtle Street and is directly across the road from one of the buildings that we used to work in.
