Elemental pleasures
Though he couldn’t spit as well as his brother Pratap who, with casual violence, could make his spit resound wherever it fell, it pleased Mr. Biswas to see his spit circling slowly above the black fish before being carried away into the main stream.
--V.S. Naipaul, A House for Mr. Biswas.
I could blip another ideally beautiful picture of the exquisite Bella against a sky filled with plum blossoms. But one of the things I love about spending Wednesdays with Bella is that we don’t always do pretty things. Today on the way to the library, we got glasses of water and experimented to see who could spit the furthest. She won.
There is something elementally satisfying about spit. Oh, and if you really want yet another beautiful Bella picture, here you are then.
Thank you all for your wonderful, richly encouraging comments for Joy. I am going to phone her tomorrow, as it’s a bit late tonight; I will read her every word each of you left, and then I’ll copy the comments out and deliver them to her hands, along with prints of the photographs and a flash drive.
