The Golden Circle

This morning we walked into Reykjavik and went into Hallgrimskirkja- a huge church with a massive tower. Fortunately there was a lift up to the top of the tower were we got spectacular views of the whole of Reykjavik.
This afternoon we went on the Golden Circle tour. First stop was in the National Park - a huge rift valley where the American and Euroasian tectonic plates merg and are still drifting apart. This is a UNESCO world heritage site.
Next stop was at the geothermal area of Geyser. Here the water gurgles and bubbles when super heated water escapes from deep underground and at about every 8 minutes a massive force if water and steam shoots into the air. It was so amazing to watch this even though the air temperature was so cold and the wind so strong we had to brace ourselves against it.
The last stop was to Gullfoss - an incredible waterfall. I think it looked ever more spectacular as a lot of it was frozen. The water flows over 3 steps of lava layers with incredible power. The photo just does not anywhere near do it justice. It was so hard attempting to keep the camera anywhere near still in the gale force winds and whilst constantly being splattered by water.
The drive back to Reykjavik was incredible too, through the snow covered mountains.
