Chinese New Year

I hope this isn't rude. We have had this medal in the family for a long time and don't know what it means. My Mum's aunt worked in China so presumably she was given it. One story is her train was attacked by Boxers and she survived as their sword broke trying to break into her trunk and as this was in ill omen they left. The sword was made into a small knife. Or so the story goes.
