Composition No 611 - Hungry Gap

I am happy to feed wild birds and even red squirrels throughout the winter months but there has always been a debate amongst country dwellers as to when to let them find wild food. John Seymour called it "the hungry gap" during which time the wildlife need our free food until the summer feast of new growth.
I was always of the "feed them anyway" view until, after a very mild winter with little snow or frost, this young chick appeared at my back door .............
