St. Andrew's Church Girton.

Today I visited Girton, Cambs. Known as Grittune in the Domesday Book, and meaning farmstead or village on gritty land. The parish church has been dedicated to St Andrew since at least 1240, and part of the west tower contains stones that were probably from an earlier church on the site. Parts of 13th century construction are still in evidence. The present building was largely reconstructed in the 15th and 16th centuries. It was owned by Ramsey Abbey from the 12th century until the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Girton has had a settlement for thousands of years. The parish lies on the Via Devana, a Roman Road.
