George Wyllie's Portable Spire
I was at Summerhall in Edinburgh today rifling through the George Wyllie Archive with GW Foundation curator, Lynne Mackenzie. Lynne was also dismantling the Keeping the Balance exhibition, which has been running there for a few months.
At the beginning of the 1980s, George introduced the Spire into his personal art arsenal. He wore it slung over his back like a rifle in a custom-made leather pouch.
He placed his spires in all sorts of locations in the UK and further afield.
They celebrated, he said, the 'places on which they stood'.
A very basic structure, each spire had a rod heading skywards balanced by a stone. It was usually set on a tripod of steel or wood to enable it to move about, like the sails of a ship.
Air, Stone, Equilibrium, Understanding.
