Rockville, Maryland Train Station (Mono-Monday)

This is hardly an ancient building by others' standards but for our region, this railroad station house, which was built in 1873, is considered old and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

"Rockville remained a small village until the Baltimore & Ohio (B&O) railroad came through in the 1880s. The construction of the Rockville passenger and freight station was part of the development of the Metropolitan Branch of the B&O and also an important contributor to the city's growth.  The dramatic impact that the opening of the rail had on Rockville is demonstrated by its population growth, from a mere 660 residents in 1870 to 1,568 only twenty years later.   Located only 15 miles north of Washington, D.C., Rockville became a popular summer resort from the 1880s through the early 20th century."

When a new metro station was built in 1981 with combined use of subway and trains, locals sought to preserve this historic building.  The 400 ton station was lifted off its foundation, and moved approximately 30 feet south and reoriented 180 degrees so that the platform faced the street. Today it is the home of several Law offices.

Although it is a gray and cold day, I thought the station looked particularly attractive with this bit of snow still adorning its roof.

Thanks so much to JoanneInOz for hosting this month's Mono Monday. March will be hosted by Chantler63 and “On the Move” is next week's theme (mm57).
