A bit o lateral thinking.

The predecessor had a loose control "string" dangling at the, reachable, left hand, end.
Not only that, we could buy the length we needed. In the intervening years things appear to have improves worse.
1. We were forced to buy the nearest, oversize & cut to fit.
2. The control was at t'other end and YES i did try all ways up & round. I could have used left hand end by mounting it "inside out"
3. Due to the design of the kitchen it was damnear impossible to easily wind down when the sun's low & literally impossible the the vertically challenged Gaffer. Since we hadn't, yet chucked out the old one I had a minor wain brave and came up with this, somewhat "Heath Robinsonian" idea.
Just in case you've never heard of the bloke....
William Heath Robinson was an English cartoonist and illustrator best known for drawings of ridiculously complicated machines for achieving simple objectives.
