Clean Monday

Today is Clean Monday, the first day of Lent. Traditionally men and children go out and fly kites in the morning while the women clean the kitchen of any last traces of anything nice to eat. Then, weather permitting, the family goes to the beach for a picnic including octopus. We have learned recently that the new and modern way to tenderise octopus is to put it into a cement-mixer (on it's own). Probably from the point of view of an onlooker it might look rather less brutal than bashing it against the harbour wall 40 times, which is the old-fashioned method.
Now for several weeks of eating nothing but fish, weeds and eggs.
