Cleopatra Stone

This stone is to be found on the shoreline at Cromarty at the tip of the Black Isle. It commemorates the very many people who sailed from these shores in search of a better life. The central quotation seems to be from a piece written by Hugh Miller in mid-1831 for the Inverness Courier. He was writing about the sailing of the Cleopatra but the names of many more emigrant ships are inscribed along the edge. Hugh Miller, geologist and writer, was himself a native of Cromarty.
