STREET

This stretch of tarmac is significant in that it is a High Street. In fact it is, quite possibly, the only High Street to be found in the Outer Hebrides. It differs from other such named streets in that it has an open aspect and has no retail outlets. In the past, the street was home to a couple of general merchants, an agricultural contractor, garage, tailors, shoemaker, joinery workshop and a telephone kiosk. Other than the kiosk all the other outlets are long gone. Skigersta High Street is similar to Edinburgh's Princes Street in that most of the built architecture is kept to the South side of the street!
