Piles of history
There are several apple packing sheds remaining around the estuary inlets of Mariri. The coastal road between Motueka and Nelson used to wind around the inlets making it a long, dusty, windy drive. In the 1970's a causeway was built across the inlets. Over time and for various reasons the individual sheds were abandoned for large cooperative sheds. The sheds were built right in the tidal estuary because small boats and barges would take the packed apples from the shed to the Motueka Wharf to be sent overseas.
I have been waiting for a big tide to show how the tide comes up round the piles that have stood for well over 80 years. The sheds were later used for storage of farm machinery although some were turned into art gallerys and wineries.
