Gods and mammon
Backblip
I liked this view of the Olympic equestrian arena being built in Greenwich Park against the backdrop of part of London's finance and media empire.
The Olympics began at Olympia in 776BC, a cult site for the worship of Zeus, the supreme god. It's thought that the move from honouring Zeus solely with dedicatory offerings to honouring him through athletics was due to competition between the rising Greek city-states, a desire to get men fit for military training, and a means of asserting the power and influence on humans of Zeus through producing champions, which the Greeks believed the gods supported.
