River Aire 4

This is a much photographed shot of the wier in the River Aire as it passes part of Salt's Mill at Saltaire.
This is a World Heritage site, the village having been created by Sir Titus Salt for his employees at his Alpaca spinning mill on the River Aire.
(The name being a combination of Salt's surname and the River that provided the water for his mill processes)

The section of mill shown here is was known as the 'New Mill' and is now offices and apartment dwellings. The Leeds - Liverpool canal cuts through the mill site parallel to the river and the building at the other side is a retail and dining development which also houses the famous 1825 gallery (the date when the mill was established) which shows a range of the works by David Hockney. Only this week a new exhibition has opened of his 'Spring' series of 'paintings' created on the iPad. It's a brilliant place and always worth a visit!

Today we were just passing through. We had walked along the canal side from Bingley ( Dowley Gap) and then crossed from the canal and over the river into Roberts Park to return on the riverside, passing the boat house belonging to Bradford Amatuer Rowing club where rowers can often be seen practising in the summer months.
Before getting back to our starting point the river actually passes under the canal. The two are in close proximity for many miles between Leeds and the river's source at Malham.
