Elephant head rock
Today we started out at the vast Cuber Reservoir to make our way back to Soller via Fornalutx and Biniaraix.
We gained some height after leaving the reservoir, ascending the Coll de L'Ofre from which there were magnificent views with Mallorca's highest mountain, Puig Major dominating the landscape and keeping the reservoir safely cradled in a natural basin.
Carrying on down through the mountains, we descended 2,000 steps deep into the valley of Ofre, sometimes the footpath carved out of the stone appeared to be a massive stone staircase. The stone was quite remarkable in places, this blip shows it resembling an elephant head.
At times we caught glimpses of Soller from up high. We stopped for lunch by the Torrent d'Ofre and then carried on our descent through beautiful terraced olive groves which were soon interspersed with vineyards.
When we reached Fornalutx we stopped to consult the map and in the nearby small square was a beautiful old wash house. We carried on down the valley through lush orchards of citrus fruit, almonds, and my favourite, medlar fruit.
As we reached Biniaraix it was good to look back and see how far we had come. Then on to Soller where the sun was at full blast and there were beers awaiting in the cathedral square.
