Oh Poppy :(
Swallowing a stick is a very bad idea, especially when it punctures your throat.
So an overnight stay at the Vet, an x-Ray and probably some stitches.
Poor lass :(
I added this update to Facebook after posting my Blip...
'I was called upon to be an animal ambulance this evening. Not a problem at all. Got poorly Poppy to the emergency vet without any incident. N, Poppy and I were sitting in the waiting room when there was a bit of a kerfuffle at the door, whereupon two elderly ladies eased into the surgery carrying a largish dog crate between them.
The kerfuffle turned out to be a fairly healthy looking Canada Goose in said cage, honking for all it was worth and doing a really good impression of a swivelling periscope.
The ladies explained that they'd found the 'poor thing' in the garden and thought it was ill because *whispered at receptionist* 'I think it's got diarrhoea' but... 'It was quite happy to come to us for some bread'. Anyone who has ever been near a goose knows that they sh*t like you would NOT believe. If a goose ever actually got diarrhoea it would be really hard to tell the difference, frankly.
So this poor goose set down in a suburban garden for little breather. When proffered a light snackette he thought, 'Yeah, why not - it's another three days until kebab Friday...' and WHAM! Bright lights, fast car journey (well ok...) and an overnight at her Majesty's pet equivalent.
I think the moral of this story is never settle down for a rest in an old ladies' front garden...'
