Down and out?
This is all that remains of the old pier in Swanage which was built in the 1850s to facilitate the loading of stone from the local Purbeck quarries which was delivered on small trams running along the front onto the pier. You can still see the tram lines today although they have been absorbed into the new paving. The new pier which I blipped a couple of days ago was installed at the end of the 19th century to cater for pleasure steamers from Poole. That one also fell into disrepair in the 1960s but has been lovingly restored by a local group of volunteers.
It's been a beautiful day today and if you look carefully you will see the Isle of Wight in the distance. First time we've seen that since we've been here. Today was the day to go on the Swanage railway, all under steam this week up to Corfe Castle. Another interesting place to go.
Good holiday coming to an end now.
