Meet the Blues Brothers!

And then, when we thought it couldn't get any colder, the bottom REALLY dropped out. The temperature fell to minus 10 degrees F (around minus 23 C) overnight, and Monday morning dawned colder than any morning I can remember. If you consider wind chills, it was even colder yet.

At temperatures like these, exposed flesh can freeze in less than a half-hour. I wouldn't know, though, because I didn't go out; not once! Monday is my usual day to work at home, and you might be surprised how often this winter that stay-at-home Monday has served as my get-out-of-bad-weather-jail-free card. 

My husband went out, though, because there were very hungry (and cold) rabbits and birds waiting for snacks. He put out peanuts for the birds, dry oatmeal for the birds and bunnies, and a combination of nuts, veggies, and craisins (like raisins, only made of cranberries) for the bunnies.

I have to admit that we were delighted and relieved when we saw both of the bunnies. I know they are hardy creatures, but still, we worry about them. Mini Bunzini (who was sitting just outside the frame of this shot as I took it) was the first visitor in the morning, but Spot did not show up until around 3 in the afternoon.

The birds were at the feeder all day long, ravenous from the cold. And they ate and ate and ate, and then asked for more. This photo features a pair of visitors, who arrived, raucous and famished, around 7:20 in the morning: the Blues Brothers, Jake and Elwood. They took turns gobbling down peanuts and then took off, returning frequently throughout the day.
