Sunflower Series # 3
Two bumblebees on this sunflower. I like the way they appear to mirror each other.
Most of the bumbles on my flowers are gold ones, so this cream chap is rather unusual. Four species of bumblebee were introduced to New from Britain. The intention was to pollinate the introduced red clover. Bumblebees have longer 'tongues' than honey bees and that extra reach is needed for red clover.
After introduction it was found that the largest of the bumbles didn't actually have a long enough 'tongue' either - but they have gone on to become the most prolific of the species.
