The whole do-re-mi thing comes from the first verse of the Latin hymn Ut queant laxis:

Ut queant laxis reson?re fibris
Mira gestorum famuli tuorum,
Solve polluti labii reatum,
Sancte Iohannes.

Lord knows how Ut somehow got changed to do.
