Waxing Crescent Moon over Betelgeuse

Constellation : Orion
Distance : 643 + 146 light years
Age : 10 Million Years

Betelgeuse is the 8th brightest star in the night sky & 2nd brightest star in the constellation Orion, outshining Rigel only rarely.

Classified as a red supergiant, it is currently in a late stage of stellar evolution and is expected to proceed through its expected life cycle before exploding as a type II supernova within the next million years.

With the history of astronomy intimately associated with mythology and astrology prior to scientific revolution, the red star has been closely associated with the martial archetype of conquest for millennia, and by extension, with the motif of death and rebirth. In South African mythology, Betelgeuse was a lion watching in a predatory manner the three zebras represented by Orion's belt.

Wow, 10 Mil y/o! That makes me feel quite young albeit small and insignificant! Lol!

I know the quality of this shot is not the best.... but as soon as I saw this waxing crescent moon and this lone star hovering above this mountain, I knew I had to pull over from the freeway to take a quick snap. My night sky map indicated the star was Betelgeuse, yes, I have a star map I carry around with me! I hope you enjoy this sight as much as I did. :)

Enjoy the evening blipland!
