My Grandfather's Coat

The coat just appeared amongst all the hats and coats in the porch. It had the air of something that had been there for a long time. No-one claimed it or recognised it and, jokingly, we labelled it as my Grandfather's coat. The joke was that it was a style that my Grandfather would never have worn. It was borrowed, occasionally, by guests or people who couldn't be bothered to find their own coat. I wore it from time to time. It was warm and had a slightly musty smell which wasn't unpleasant.

When we had the big tidy out, I refused to let it go. After all, it was all that I had to remember my Grandfather by.
