Willamette Falls & Mt. Hood

I love this vantage point along I-205 of Mount Hood with Oregon City and Willamette Falls in the foreground.  Yesterday was a perfect day to snap a photo of this historic spot.

The falls are horseshoe shaped and are caused by a basalt shelf in the river floor. They are 40 ft (12 m) high and 1500 ft (457 m) wide falls occur 26 river miles (42 km) upstream from the Willamette's confluence with the Columbia River. Operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, there are locks (a set of four locks) which creates the oldest continuous operating, multiple lift navigation canal in the United States.  The falls are the largest in the Pacific Northwest and 17th widest in the world.
