The Westwood

This is an area of common land which surrounds Beverley. It is frequented by dog walkers, runners, golfers, race horses and cattle!

In the middle of the Westwood is the golf course, quite unique in that only the greens are fenced off and the rest of the course has people and in the summer herds of cattle, wandering all over it.

Another interesting feature is the gallops, this is a dry, flat shallow ditch which runs around the outskirts of the land and was constructed specifically for race horses, it is known as a 'tan' , it crosses several of the golf holes and needs to be avoided!

The Westwood has two old mills, the Anti-mill which has been converted into the golf club house and the Black Mill (the one above) which is on the third golf hole.
