nonsenses & truths

Dusk

Really noticing the lighter evenings now, this is the first time I have been to the college at Moreton Morrell and actually been able to see the surroundings.  I had to check the identity of the huge flock that were preparing to roost in these trees - If there's more than one crow they are rooks, if there is only one rook its a crow.  I have never seen so many rooks together at once.  While I was waiting for them to come back I noticed a tiny hole in the grass in front of me with two well-worn tracks leading to it and a very fast shrew darting around.

What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.
No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows.

No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.
No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night.

No time to turn at Beauty's glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance.
No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began.

A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.
