Ain't nature wonderful?

This is called the Bird's Nest Fungus, for perfectly obvious reasons. However, for any bird to perch on this nest the would have to be less than 5mm long. Yes it's THAT small! The 'eggs' are the spores and are only released if hit by a rain drop. Nature is truly amazing.

The fungus was found at Minsmere last weekend. It's not rare but it IS rarely seen because it's usually in woodland and is so tiny. People have been coming from far and wide to 'twitch' it - though not sure you can twitch a fungus.

It was perishing cold there today. Arrived at Island Mere shortly after 8 in very low light. This did not improve during the rest of the day but a total of at least 30+ bird species wasn't too bad, plus fleeting but beautiful views of Otters.
