Chattel Houses
These are Chattel Houses, which literally means a house that can be moved. Made of wood, constructed without nails and set on blocks they were a way of people moving their house to a new location. The reason behind their development is that poor people didn't own the land and therefore were vulnerable to those who did and needed a way of protecting their home.
These particular Chattel Houses are in Holetown and are now used as small shops rather than for their original purpose.
