Great Egret plumes were widely used to decorate women's hats during the early 20th century. An ounce of egret feathers costs as much as $32--more than an ounce of gold at the time! As a result, egret populations rapidly plummeted towards extinction. Egrets are named after their silky breeding plumes, called aigrettes. The aigrettes can grow up to 4 1/2 feet long.

Great Egrets are widespread permanent residents throughout Florida. Because of their long legs and long necks, they can forage in deeper water than other egrets
