Hoolock Gibbons at Kandawgyi Botanical Gardens
Or Eastern Hoolock Gibbons to give them their proper name.
This morning we have a wander round town and decide to walk to the Kandawgyi Botanical Gardens, about 3km out of town. Its a beautiful place which was apparently modelled on Kew Gardens. There is plenty of wildlife here too including birds, takins, deer and these gibbons. There is also a viewing tower with great views over the lake, the town and the surrounding mountains. We spend most of the day here and take a horse and carriage back, feeling very regal.
Because of the town's altitude it has a cooler climate than much of Myanmar and they grow lots of fruit - they are well known for their strawberries. They also make wine and we buy a bottle of damson wine.
We try the wine which is interesting but quite drinkable then think we should go out for dinner as its getting late. We don't manage to find anywhere open so just have a snack at a small place by the side of the road, buy another bottle and head back to the room to play cards. The second bottle is not so nice as its much too sweet ... probably not a bad thing as we've not really eaten anything.
