I went to a talk at Manchester Museum and after touring some of the galleries, we went down to the stores. It's always fascinating to have a (supervised) poke around in drawers and cupboards, seeing artefacts collected from all over the world, including Benin bronzes clubs in the shape of oars and Elizabeth Gaskell's writing set. On the way out, we passed this anonymous looking corridor, and the rooms leading off it apparently used to be the labs where Ernest Rutherford did his pioneering work on nuclear physics in the early 20th century and won the Nobel Prize. Now that was unexpected
