Janya

The name Janya means 'life' in Hindi.
This delightful and lifelike bronze baby Indian Elephant was a present from Chester Zoo to the people of Chester to celebrate the strong friendship between the Zoo and the City. It stands near the Cathedral, and opposite the Guildhall in the city centre.
She was created in 2010 by the sculptress Annette Yarrow, who grew up in India in the 1930's and 40's.
There is another, similar, sculpture at Chester Zoo, together with a herd of living Indian Elephants.
The sculpture represents the important work of the Chester Zoo in elephant protection and conservation.
