Muttley's Musings

Bloody Meadow

Another fine morning so I took the opportunity to go out and get some pictures, and I ended up doing the way marked walk around Towton Battlefield, which is the site of possibly the bloodiest battle ever fought on British soil when on Palm Sunday in 1461 the forces of the Yorkists and Lancastrians met in battle in a snow storm as part of the War of the Roses. This view is of what is known as Bloody Meadow where the rout of the Lancastrian forces really began.

Today, however, was a far more peaceful day with the occasional startled cry of a cock Pheasant, the soft bipping of Long Tailed Tits in the hedges, and the delightful melody of skylarks above interspersed with the muted pop of distant shotguns and the more machine gun like rattling of a woodpecker in the woods, and the fragrance of damp earth as the plough furrows began to unfreeze in the rising sun. What better place could I have been?

More about the battle can be found here

Thanks for the comments and stars on yesterdays sunset blip, they are appreciated and I'll catch up soon.
