Karamea....

...the gateway to the Kahurangi National Park.

We travelled to Karamea today as it is a part of the South Island that we haven't been to. Karamea is approx 2 1/2 hours from Murchison, and is snuggled into the warm northwest corner of the South Island. It is the furthest you can drive up the top of the West Coast. The weather is very sub-tropical, and is ideal to grow fruit like bananas and citrus.

This afternoon we went to the start of the Heaphy track where I took this photo of the swing bridge. We walked an hour of the track, through native bush. The Heaphy track is 82 km long, and takes 4 days to walk. The track ends in Golden Bay, at the top of the South Island.
