The Ashton Memorial

The Ashton Memorial is a folly in Williamson Park, Lancaster, England built between 1907 and 1909 by millionaire industrialist Baron Ashton in memory of his second wife, Jessy, at a cost of over £80,000 (equivalent to £7.3 million in 2015

Here's a look at the exterior and interior which is marble floored and quite opulent. Hard to believe it took only 2 years to build, commencing in 1907. It's clad in Portland stone and stands at 150 feet high. Easily seen quite clearly from the M6 motorway as you approach the junction 34 turn off to Lancaster.

James Williamson as he was, prior to becoming Baron Ashton, was the largest employer in Lancaster, producing oil cloth and Linoleum at his factory in the town. He left Williamson Park as it's known, to the people of Lancaster on his death.
