Ordinary Life Illuminated

Syrian Refugees in Al Marj Settlement

A Syrian family looks into the mirror in their one-room home in an informal settlement in Al Marj, in the Bekaa Valley, Lebanon. The mother, Noura, 30, is the head of the household of five, her husband back in Syria. They are from Aleppo, and the four children span in age from one month (Najwa is the infant in her mother’s arms in the photo) to 12 years old. Though they are lucky to live in a cement enclosed room, it costs them $200 in rent per month to the Lebanese landowner to stay - a massive burden.
