Individualism against Community
I’ve been trying to cut out the things which get in the way of my relationship with God. One of these things is Facebook. I’m addicted to it. It’s all about me and not about God. I’m fitting into the mould of the world.
One of the effects of the Reformation was the individualisation of faith and spirituality: the emphasis was on people’s invisible relationship with God which in itself is a good thing. Post-enlightenment there’s a much greater sense of the individual. Technology has brought us both closer and further apart. We may have more ‘friends’ according to social media but we have less close relationships.
Work sometimes feels ‘in the way’ but it’s important that my Rule involves community: real relationships and not social networks. Building relationships at Work, Church and socially is important: learning to see Christ in everyone I meet. I think I need to join a club when I have more time. Community is where vocation is worked out. "Genuine contemplative awareness does not lead to withdrawal from the world, but a deep immersion in the world." (McCarthy 2000:200). The times when I am at work, then, are just as important as the times of prayer.
