Beaten rice

I went with Deepak and my friend Cynthia, who had come over from Patan where she lives, to a restaurant which serves Newari specialities, including beaten rice, which is first soaked and then beaten as pictured. It becomes crispy. Think breakfast cereal, but without the sugar. We also had hard-boiled egg, soya beans, a lentil pancake, greens, potatoes and pickle. That makes it all sound far more prosaic than it was. Followed by a pud which was like a treacle-filled momo in the shape of a squid. Delicious, extremely filling and very messy to eat!

Whoops, forgot to mention the buff - Hindus don't eat beef but they do eat buffalo and it's very tasty.
