Brass Buttons

Anybody know anything about antique brass buttons?  This belonged to my grandfather, who was a ship's captain (British Merchant Navy, then captain of ferry between Galway and the Aran Islands).  I guess it dates from between 1922 (Irish independence) and the 1950s.
