Former Royal Hunting ground.
Savernake Forest, on the edge of Marlborough, was once a Norman king royal hunting ground.
In Tudor times, the land was owned by the Seymour family and was extensively replanted with oak and beech.
Sadly much of it is now decayed...and only brief stretches give any idea of its former glory.
This said, access on foot is permitted to most of it and it has a quiet beauty even on a January morning.
