Bullaun Stone

After a very domestic morning painting, Rosie and I headed over for some music at Hackets Bar. We detoured on the way to look at Stouke burial ground near Ballydehob, where we hoped to find a bullaun stone, a bowl like depression in the rock, possible naturally occurring but worked by humans to increase it's size. Folklore attaches magical or religious significance to the bullaun stones, such as the belief that the water collected in them has healing properties! The ritual use of the bullaun stone as continued into the Christian period and today coins are often placed inside or beside them.
